Human Brains Invaded by Microplastics, Researchers Demand Worldwide Emergency

Microplastics are now present in the air, water, soil, food, and human organs due to the widespread usage of plastics. This has seriously contaminated the ecosystem.

Environmental contamination, particularly the release of microplastics, has been caused by the widespread use of plastic by humans. According to reports, these microscopic plastic particles can be found in the food, water, soil, air, and even human organs. Given their potential to negatively impact ecosystems and human health, microplastics represent a significant environmental and health risk.

In a study published in The Guardian, scientists have called for more immediate action to reduce plastic pollution due to mounting evidence that microplastics are building up in vital human organs, such as the brain. Reproductive organs, the liver, kidneys, knee and elbow joints, blood vessels, bone marrow, and human lungs have all been shown to contain minute pieces and particles of plastic, according to studies.

Sedat Gundogdu, a microplastics researcher at Cukurova University in Turkey, stated that “it is now imperative to declare a global emergency” to address plastic pollution in light of the research findings.

Microplastics, which are particles smaller than 5 mm in diameter, and the chemicals used to produce plastics are present in the air, water, and even food that humans come into contact with.

A research paper that was published online by the National Institutes of Health and is currently undergoing peer review highlights an especially alarming accumulation of microplastics in brain samples. Lead study author Matthew Campen, a toxicologist and University of New Mexico pharmaceutical sciences professor, reports that in early 2024, brain samples were obtained, and on average, the researchers detected 0.5% of plastic by weight in those samples.

It’s really concerning, according to Campen. Our brains include a lot more plastic than I ever would have thought or felt comfortable with.
